Some of the nation's largest companies have formed an association to represent businesses that purchase renewable energy and to advocate for policies that will make it easier for others to switch to renewables.
The Renewable Energy Buyers Alliance consists of more than 300 companies representing a wide range of industries, according to a news release by the group. Association members include Google, Facebook, General Motors and Walmart, and its leadership circle includes companies that together account for 1 percent of all U.S. energy consumption.
"Never before has such a diverse group of organizations, from every industry, come together to form an association with a single, market-focused, mission-driven vision of a zero-carbon energy future," REBA CEO Miranda Ballentine said in a statement.
REBA was originally founded in 2014 as a partnership between four NGOs—Rocky Mountain Institute, World Wildlife Fund, World Resources Institute and Business for Social Responsibility. Under its new direction as a trade association, the group seeks to bring more than 60 gigawatts of new renewables online in United States by 2025. By comparison, U.S. corporations purchased 6.43 gigawatts of renewable power in 2018, according to the World Resources Institute. http://bit.ly/2HJla3J
REBA lists 12 staff on its website, including Ballentine, who most recently was COO of Constant Power, a developer of distributed energy projects, according to her LinkedIn profile. She previously was managing director of the Rocky Mountain Institute's Business Renewables Center and, before that, assistant secretary of installations, environment and energy for the U.S. Air Force. She has an MBA in environmental management and policy from George Washington University.
REBA has offices in Washington, D.C., and Boulder, Colo. Its website is rebuyers.org.
